After Marcos escapes from Don Pablo's farm, he returns to liberate his beloved Carolina. This is director Ivan Dariel Ortiz's second feature film. Several years ago we screened his first - Heroes de Otra Patria/Heroes of Another Country. Best of Show and Special Director Award, 2007 Tulipanes Latino Art and Film Festival, Michigan.

Javier and Maria live together. Discontented with life in Argentina, they plan to migrate to Miami in search of a better life. Since Maria has a US residency, they hastily marry and she flies ahead. He resigns his job, sells his car and apartment, and packs his things. On the way to the airport he receives a call from Maria. She doesn't want him to come over - she's confused - she's involved with somebody else. Javier is destroyed. He's a walking ghost, constantly pestering his friends, family and shrink about Maria and about getting her back. He goes through a complete duel period, every stage documented in clever comedy. Finally getting back to his senses, he tries to set out again and find somebody. Getting "it" back is difficult and he's bad (very) at it. After a few mishaps, he meets someone - Julia, an emotionally scarred but sweet clerk at the veterinarian. Things seem to work, slowly but promising. Then Maria's father dies and she returns....

MALDEAMORES (Romantic Drama; Puerto Rico 2007; NR)
Saturday March 29 @ 1PM
in RAZZO HALL in TRAINA ACADEMIC CENTER.

Director: Carlos Ruiz Ruiz & Mariem Perez. Stars: Luis Guzman, Teresa Hernandez, Fernando Tarrazo.
From executive producer Benicio Del Toro comes a film about love of all kinds and at all ages. Tales of maddening infatuation - a surprising love triangle, an unfaithful marriage and a hostage situation - weave together artfully in the backyards of Puerto Rico. Passion defeats reason again and again in this unique and surprising comedy about the search for love and connection. Both a very local snapshot of life on the island, and a bittersweet comedy about the eternal matching and mismatching of lovers of all social classes and ages that any audience can relish. Beautifully photographed and edited, Maldeamores has already been hailed by US critics as one of the best films ever made in Puerto Rico.

83 minutes. Spanish with English subtitles.

A colorful, beguiling and richly saturated concoction of romance and politics in pre-Castro Cuba. Simon runs a brisk business, scamming fellow Cubans who think they're being ferried to Florida, only to wind up on an uninhabited island somewhere in between. On one trip that goes very wrong, with the U.S. Navy in hot pursuit, a crewmember is about to shoot Simon before another crewmember, Andres, intervenes. As a reward, Simon takes Andres to a special Havana brothel, where 16 year-old Marie lures the young sailor into a plan of her own to escape to America. It all seems ridiculously simple, but ...
